Salt Pond Bay, St. John
St. John USVI Beach Guide
Not too many visitors know about this unique and quiet beach along the southeastern coast of St John's island. The locals on the other hand know all about this wonderful getaway and even collect salt that is created in the pond behind the beach. These unique salt ponds can be found all over the Virgin Islands. This is nature's natural way of providing salt from the sea. The salt water seeps into the pond from underground channels and as the wind sweeps across the pond, the water evaporates and left behind is the foamy residue of sea salt.
The beautiful crescent shape beach is becoming more popular as more many venture out in search of a quiet place to relax, sunbath and snorkel. To find Salt Pond Bay you will need to go directly to the National Park and parking in the lot for Salt Pond Bay. You can then follow a small trail down to the bay.
The Rams Head Trail begins here at Salt Pond Bay and is where snorkelers start their journey. You can follow the trail along the shore of the Ram Head Peninsula and arrive on the magnificent beach of Blue Cobblestone. Blue Cobblestone Beach gets this unique name from the cobblestones along the beach at the north end of the beach close to the large black rocks. This is the best place to go into the water is as easy as if you were on a sandy beach.
You can begin your snorkeling adventure along the large rocks there but do not touch the mustard yellow fire coral. This coral can give you quite a sting. But you will absolutely love all the colorful coral and sponges that call this area of Salt Pond Bay home.
As you travel north along the point you will notice some very unique channels, the rocky edge of the reef will become more prominent and even more brilliant in color and style. Close to the seaward edge you will get a view of another reef that forms a pinnacle and will be well worth exploring. The tropical fish and the beauty of the coral and sponges in this area are more brilliant and magnificent that you can imagine. You can snorkel all the way down the shoreline back to the Salt Pond Bay.
Many birdwatchers also love this area because it is more secluded and the birds are everywhere. If you love watching tropical birds and maybe getting a glimpse of some very rare birds, then you must visit Salt Pond Bay.
