Hawksnest Beach, St. John
St. John USVI Beach Guide
Hawksnest Beach is the one of the easiest beaches to get to out of all the beaches on St. John's Island. This is one reason it is so popular for all the local residents and visitors that have small children. You do not have to hike and carrying with you all the needed items for your children. The beach is just a short drive from Cruz Bay. If you start at Mongoose Junction you just need to go about 2 miles east on route 20. The parking lot for Hawksnest Beach is very close to the beach, this way you do not have to carry everything you need for your time at the beach with you.
Hawksnest Beach is the first beach you will get to in the National Park as you drive along North Shore Road when you leave Cruz Bay. You and your family will absolutely love the covered pavilions with picnic tables and Barbeque pits. The local really enjoy this beach and have birthday parties and other celebrations with plenty of wonderful music. There are also restrooms available but they are not the flush type toilets, but there are no showers or running water of any type, so it would be best if you have small children to bring along your own wipes. There are also no shops of any kind located on this beach. But, that can also be a wonderful treat because shopping will only take away from this beautiful setting. If you would like to reserve the pavilion area for your own family for a get together you can call the National Park directly to set up your time. Their telephone number is 776-6201.
This is a great beach for snorkeling for everyone. The coral reef is only a few from the shore. The coral is awesome and the exotic fish love watching your antics as much as you love watching theirs. Some of the magnificent fish you may see include schools of small fish like grunt, fry and goatfish. The parrotfish are among some of the most popular that everyone enjoys watching. The damselfish may be small but they will defend their territory against other larger fish. Your entire family will love the scene under the sea regardless of age.
If you would like just a little more privacy you can venture off to Little Hawksnest Beach. It is just west of Hawksnest Beach about a two minute hike over rocky terrain. It is a beautiful small beach with powdery white sand and plenty of room for the family to enjoy a quiet afternoon or morning dip in the warm water.
