St. John USVI Beach Guide
Salomon Beach has always been knows as the clothing optional beach and many nude sunbathers use to frequent this beach. But, now with the new laws governing public nudity Park Rangers will give tickets to those that wish to worship the sun all natural. The fines are pretty stiff in the amount of $110 or can include 90 days in jail.
Salomon Beach is now more of a family beach where you can spend all day enjoying the sand and surf. You can not get there however by car, taxi, or bus. You will need to either arrive by boat or be willing to a take a wonderful hike through a guided trail.
There are a few trails that will take you on a picturesque stroll through some of the most beautiful countryside that St John has to offer on your route to Salomon Beach. But, be prepared for about a one mile hike on most trails. You can begin at the National Park Visitors Center in Cruz Bay and take the Lind Point Trail. All you do is follow the trail until you arrive in the fork in the road. Then you can go either way. If you decide on the lower trail it is a little bit shorter and not quiet as hilly. The upper trail is better cared for and will take you past the Lind Point Overlook. This upper trail is very popular for the best scenic views around St Johns. You will find your way to the spur trail which will be toward your left. It will take you down the hill and on to Salomon Beach.
The water is shallow on Salomon Beach and the coral reefs are magnificent. This is a great beach for children and for beginning snorkelers to enjoy the waters of the Caribbean.
Many snorkelers whether they are beginners or professionals love the reefs that lie between Salomon Beach and Honeymoon Bay. Many of the reefs can be found in the calm, shallow water and some sections even rise above the surface during very low tides. So, you do need to be very careful when snorkeling that you do not harm the coral or that you are hurt by the coral reef.
The coral reef along Salomon Beach is more beautiful and is protected more than other reefs around St Johns. It is a good idea to pay attention to the swim buoys to ensure that you do not get in the way of the boat traffic. As you are snorkeling, you will notice many holes in the bottom of the sea floor. These unique crevices are created by the eels, worms, shrimp, clam and crabs that live in this wonderful underwater home. You will love all the brilliant colors of the coral and the exotic fish that swim by giving you an afternoon of delightful entertainment.
